The Todra Gorges in Tinghir

The Todra Gorges lie about 14 kilometers from the beautiful oasis of Tinghir, which itself is 170 kilometers from the city of Ouarzazate in southeastern Morocco. The gorges rise between towering mountains and ancient earthen kasbahs, stretching for nearly 25 kilometers. They consist of reddish rock formations at least 300 meters high, cut through by the Todra River, whose fresh water flows year-round thanks to melting snow from the High Atlas.

A world-class climbing destination

The gorges feature nearly 500 climbing routes equipped with anchor points. Climbing began here in 1964, introduced by French explorers, before young people from Tinghir founded the “Todra Climbing Club” in the 1980s. The region attracts professional world-class climbers and sees its peak tourist season between September and April.

Activities and climate of the region

Besides climbing, the gorges offer enchanting walks among palm trees and towering rock walls, especially near the entrance to the valley. The local climate is arid, with occasional heavy storms in autumn and winter; temperatures can drop below zero in December and exceed 40 degrees in July.
